Human Expansion

What's Actually Holding You Back

You may know exactly what you want, and still spend years solving the wrong problem. How to find the pattern underneath the results, and measure it.

By Chris Howard · 15 September 2026 · first published on LinkedIn as “The Invisible Pattern Choosing Your Life

You may know exactly what you want. You may already be highly successful. But until you accurately measure the operating system beneath your results, you may spend years solving the wrong problem.

There is something more dangerous than knowing your life is not working.

It is believing you know why.

You call it a discipline problem, so you push harder.

You call it a confidence problem, so you work on yourself.

You call it a strategy problem, so you gather more information.

You call it a productivity problem, so you install another system.

And years later, you are more informed, more exhausted and perhaps even more successful—but the same invisible pattern is still determining what you create, what you sustain and who you ultimately become.

The most expensive mistakes in life rarely come from doing nothing.

They come from spending years applying the wrong solution to a problem you never accurately identified.

That is why we built the Thrive Index.

Not to give you another interesting description of yourself.

To show you where you actually are, reveal what is holding you there and establish the starting measurement for your movement toward Thriving.

Because you cannot intelligently transform a life you have never accurately measured.

Two people. Opposite lives. Both far from Thriving.

Imagine two people.

The first can see the life they want in extraordinary detail.

The business.

The body.

The relationship.

The freedom.

The contribution.

Their inner world is alive with possibility. They can almost touch the future when they close their eyes.

But when they open them, very little of it exists.

Their imagination has expanded.

Their physical life has not.

They are suffering from the growing distance between what they can see and what they have been able to create.

Now imagine the second person.

They have already built what the first person is dreaming about.

The revenue is real.

The title is real.

The company is real.

The achievements are visible to everyone.

From the outside, their life looks enviable.

But on the inside, something is unraveling completely.

The work no longer means what it once meant.

Relationships are becoming explosive—or disappearing altogether.

Their internal world is collapsing beneath the weight of the outer life they have built.

They may be wracked with anxiety, living in an internal reality that has become almost intolerable and seeking escape in ways that could eventually bring down the very success everyone else admires.

One person can see the greater life but cannot bring it into existence.

The other has created an extraordinary outer life without developing the inner alignment required to inhabit it.

They would look completely different on the Thrive Index.

The first may be Dreaming: expanded internally but not creating externally.

The second may be Achieving: producing externally while collapsing internally.

Both are far from Thriving.

But they are far from it for opposite reasons.

Tell the Dreamer to visualize more, and you may simply reenforce the patterns of digging a deeper hole while seeing what they still cannot create.

Tell the Achiever to set larger goals, become more productive and push harder, and you may accelerate the internal collapse already taking place beneath the achievement.

The Dreamer does not need more possibility.

They need to identify what is preventing possibility from becoming reality.

The Achiever does not need to diminish their success or retreat from ambition.

They need alignment.

Their identity, emotional world, relationships, meaning, peace and fulfillment must expand into congruence with their ever-expanding outer success.

The goal is not to make the outside smaller.

It is to expand the inside until the human being can fully inhabit, enjoy and sustain the extraordinary life they have created.

Two people.

Two opposite lives.

Two completely different paths toward Thriving.

That is the problem the Thrive Index was built to solve.

This is not another personality test

The Thrive Index is a 100-question assessment that takes approximately 12 minutes.

It examines the structure beneath your present life:

Your physical and emotional wellbeing.

Your relationships.

Your work.

Your sense of meaning.

Your ability to act.

Your capacity to complete what matters.

And whether your internal world and external life are expanding together.

But it is more than a test.

The Thrive Index is the measurement layer of a performance-management system for human transformation and performance enhancement.

It does not give you a permanent type.

It gives you a present state.

A type says:

This is who you are.

A state says:

This is where you are.

And somewhere you are is somewhere you can leave.

What it measures

The Thrive Index measures three critical dimensions and the emotional world beneath them.

Authorship: Are you consciously directing your life—or are circumstances, obligations and other people’s priorities assembling it for you?

Integration: Are all parts of you moving toward the same future—or is one part pursuing it while another quietly applies the brakes?

Expansion: How much of your potential exists within you, and how much of it has become real in your health, relationships, work, prosperity and contribution?

Beneath all three sits your dominant emotional state.

Not what you feel during your best hour.

The emotional atmosphere through which you experience most of your life.

Because success you cannot experience is not Thriving.

And peace without the ability to express your potential in the world is not Thriving either.

What Thriving actually means

Thriving does not mean that life is perfect.

It does not mean that nothing hurts, fails or challenges you.

Thriving means your inner and outer worlds have expanded together.

You are creating at unprecedented levels without sacrificing your peace to do it.

You are achieving without abandoning yourself inside the achievement.

Your work, relationships, health and contribution increasingly express who you truly are.

You possess the authorship to choose your direction, the integration to move toward it and the capacity to make it real.

Thriving is unprecedented creation accompanied by unprecedented peace, meaning, connection and fulfillment.

That is a far higher standard than merely functioning.

And it should be.

Too many people have been taught to call survival success simply because the machinery has not stopped.

Where are you on the Human Expansion Map?

Your answers place you within one of five present states:

Collapsed: Neither the inner nor outer life is functioning adequately. Life has become something to manage rather than something to create.

Dreaming: Your inner world is alive, but your outer reality has not caught up. You can see the greater life, but you cannot consistently bring it into existence.

Achieving: Your outer world is producing while your internal world is falling out of alignment with it. You are creating success without possessing the inner expansion required to fully experience and sustain it.

Plateaued: Both worlds are functioning, but neither is operating near capacity. Nothing is bad enough to force change—while years quietly disappear beneath your potential.

Thriving: Your inner and outer worlds are expanded, aligned and continuing to grow. What you create outside expresses something real inside.

But your state is only half the answer.

The Thrive Index also identifies the barrier most responsible for holding you there.

Fragmented: One part of you wants the future while another part believes it is unsafe. What appears to be a discipline problem may actually be an internal conflict.

Reactive: You may be capable and clear, but your life is being assembled by other people’s demands, circumstances and emergencies. You are efficiently building everyone’s future except your own.

Contracted: You may be coherent and self-directed, but somewhere along the way you trimmed the dream to fit the evidence. You became effective at pursuing a life too small to require the whole of you.

This is why measurement matters.

More pressure may further divide a Fragmented person.

More opportunity may give away even more of a Reactive person’s life.

More efficiency may help a Contracted person reach the wrong destination faster.

The wrong intervention does not merely waste time. It can strengthen the very pattern you are trying to escape.

What the first 150 results revealed

Between August 4 and August 24, 2026, the first 150 people completed the Thrive Index.

Only three came back Thriving.

Thirteen were Achieving.

Twenty-one were Plateaued.

Seventy-two were Dreaming.

Forty-one were Collapsed.

The largest single result was the Contracted Dreamer.

Forty-six people who could see a greater possibility but had quietly made the life they were pursuing smaller.

This was not a random population study, so the results should not be treated as representative of humanity.

But one finding remains impossible to ignore:

113 of the first 150 people assessed were Dreaming or Collapsed.

Most were not unintelligent.

Most did not lack information.

Many could have explained exactly what they believed they should be doing.

Their problem was not necessarily a lack of answers.

It was that the human operating system attempting to execute those answers had never been accurately measured.

We measure everything except the system creating our lives

Businesses measure revenue, conversion and performance.

Athletes measure strength, speed and recovery.

Doctors measure the signals that reveal what cannot be seen from the outside.

We measure anything we are serious about improving.

Yet when it comes to the operating system determining the direction and quality of our entire lives, most people rely on mood, memory and guesswork.

“I think I’m doing all right.”

“I already know what my problem is.”

“I just need to work harder.”

But what remains unmeasured can continue governing your life while remaining unnamed.

That is why the Thrive Index is part of a performance-management system.

The process is a continuing loop:

Measure where you are.

Identify the barrier.

Apply the right transformational intervention.

Measure again.

See what actually changed.

Then direct the next stage of expansion.

The Thrive Index is the measurement layer.

The Epic Life World Engine is the developing intelligence and transformation layer designed to act on what the measurement reveals.

The destination is not endless self-improvement.

It is Thriving.

An ever-expanding life in which extraordinary creation is matched by extraordinary peace, connection, meaning and fulfillment.

Why this is urgent in the age of AI

Artificial intelligence is giving individuals unprecedented capability.

But capability does not determine direction.

Technology amplifies the operating system it serves.

Give a Fragmented person more capability, and they may create in 10 directions while completing none of them.

Give a Reactive person more tools, and they may become extraordinarily efficient at building everyone else’s future.

Give a Contracted person more speed, and they may arrive faster at a life that was never large enough for them.

Give an internally collapsing Achiever more productive power without restoring alignment, and AI may help expand the very outer structure their inner world can no longer sustain.

The first question of the AI age should not simply be:

What can artificial intelligence do for me?

It should be:

What within me will be amplified when it does?

Measure the human first.

Reveal the operating system.

Transform what limits it.

Align the inner and outer worlds.

Then place extraordinary intelligence into the hands of a human being capable of directing it toward a life worthy of their potential.

That is Human Expansion.

Twelve minutes—or another year?

You can continue assuming you know what the problem is.

You can work harder.

Gather more information.

Install more tools.

Set another goal.

And perhaps the solution you choose will accidentally reach the real barrier.

Or you can take approximately 12 minutes and measure it.

The danger is not discovering that you are not yet Thriving.

Your result is not a verdict.

The danger is allowing an invisible pattern to choose another year of your life while you continue calling it circumstances, personality or reality.

How much has that pattern already cost you?

How much success have you created without being able to experience it?

How much of the dream have you removed because you stopped believing you could make it real?

How many more years are you prepared to spend applying the wrong solution to the wrong problem?

Your state is not your identity.

It is your present location.

And when you know your location, you can stop wandering and begin moving deliberately.

Take the free Thrive Index now at thethriveindex.com.

It takes approximately 12 minutes, and your result will be emailed to you when you finish.

Discover your current state.

Identify the barrier most likely holding you there.

Establish the first measurement in your movement toward Thriving.

Do not wait until the fracture beneath achievement becomes collapse.

Do not wait until the dream has been reduced so many times that you can no longer remember its original size.

Do not give artificial intelligence the power to amplify an operating system you have never examined.

And do not allow an invisible pattern to choose another year of your life.

Measure where you are.

Discover what is holding you there.

Begin moving toward Thriving.

Take the Thrive Index now.

Expand yourself. Expand your world. Expand others.
